EDINBURGH AND LOTHIANS BADGER GROUP

Road Traffic Accidents

Large numbers of Badgers die in road accidents every year. Keeping track of where these accidents occur helps the group to track badger accivity, and may lead to the introduction of new measures such as fencing and badger tunnels to help prevent future accidents. If you see a dead badger at the side of the road, note the position as accurately as you can and contact the group by phone or by e-mail.

Where a badger has been injured but is still alive, it is important to seek expeienced assistance quickly. Badgers are powerful animals and you run a significant risk of injury attempting to help an injured animal.

This series of photos shows the release of a badger, which was found, injured, by a passing taxi driver. He drove it to a Vet where it was treated and after a few days the ELBG were asked if we knew of setts in the area so that it could be released back where it came from. Trish and one of the vets carried it up on Corstorphine Hill to a point above Balgreen road and roughly halfway between two main setts whereby it was released and shot off determinedly in the direction of one of the setts.
